NBA: Emirates NBA Cup opening night

  • Warriors 112, Lakers 95. Golden State trailed 38-15 after one and by as many as 25, then won by 17. No team in the past 30 seasons has trailed by 25 and won by that much. Luka Dončić scored 21 in the 1st quarter and finished with 37, but he shot 12 of 27. Stephen Curry scored 31 with 8 threes and 6 assists, and he passed Dominique Wilkins for 18th on the all-time scoring list. Golden State’s bench outscored the Lakers’ 50-7, led by De’Anthony Melton (16) and Georges Niang (11). Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, who had trash-talked Dončić before the game, fouled out with 6 points and called it the “worst game of my life.” The Warriors are 3-3 after an 0-3 start, and the Lakers are 4-2. (~2M views). It’s the most-watched clip of the night: Curry’s crossover sent Dončić to the floor, and Curry paused, hit the three and grabbed his head in disbelief. He told Prime afterward he “didn’t expect it to get that nasty.”
  • Mavericks 116, Rockets 111. Kyrie Irving scored 35 (26 in the second half) with 9 assists, and Cooper Flagg had 33, including the go-ahead and-one late. Houston (5-1) took its first loss. Kevin Durant scored 28 and posterized Daniel Gafford, but he missed key free throws late. Dallas is 4-2.
  • Nuggets 127, Suns 120. Jamal Murray scored 39 with 7-of-9 shooting from three, and Christian Braun had a career-high 31, also with 7 threes. Nikola Jokić added 18 points and 10 assists, and Denver hit 20 threes. Dillon Brooks had 22 on 9-of-12 shooting before he was ejected in the 3rd quarter for kicking Murray in the groin on a jumper, which was upgraded to a flagrant 2. Murray said they’re “buddies” and that it wasn’t intentional. (~410K views). The kick got the whole internet saying “Dillon Brooks being Dillon Brooks,” and his name was trending nationally overnight.
  • Heat 145, Pacers 125. Giannis Antetokounmpo had a triple-double of 31 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists on 72% shooting. Bam Adebayo scored 27, and Klay Thompson had 25 with 7 threes. Miami is 2-4, and short-handed Indiana is 2-4. (~620K views). It’s the night’s No. 2 NBA clip, as vintage Klay in a Heat jersey keeps catching people off guard.
  • 76ers 98, Knicks 93. This was a rematch of opening night. Tyrese Maxey scored 27, and LeBron James had 20 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists, including the putback that sealed it late after a Jalen Brunson three briefly gave New York the lead. Brunson scored 24. Philadelphia is 5-1, and the champion Knicks are 2-4.
  • Celtics 125, Bulls 111. Payton Pritchard scored a season-high 30, and Boston led 78-49 at halftime. Bulls rookie Caleb Wilson scored 23. Boston is 4-1, and Chicago is 1-5.
  • Pistons 110, Nets 94. Detroit outscored Brooklyn 71-38 in the second half. Ron Holland II scored 18 off the bench, and Cade Cunningham had 20. Paul Reed’s postgame line about pace, “I don’t know what that means but I’m just gonna say it favors us,” went viral. Detroit is 5-1, and the Nets are 0-5.
  • Magic 121, Raptors 114. Desmond Bane scored 28, and Franz Wagner had 11 assists. Scottie Barnes scored a career-high 41 for Toronto in the loss.
  • Timberwolves 127, Clippers 101. LaMelo Ball scored 24, and Rudy Gobert had 13 rebounds. Minnesota is 4-2, and the Clippers are 1-4.
  • Wizards 95, Hornets 79. Anthony Davis had 25 points and 13 rebounds. No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa scored 17 in his home debut and gave his dad the game ball. It’s the fewest points Washington has allowed since 2015.
